I would like to hear people's personal stories about their move from India to Israel. I'm especially insterested in stories of earlier generations. Some of the things I would like to hear your opinion about are:

  • Describe the cultural differences encountered, expectations, challenges, etc.
  • Describe the process in India - how did you decide to move to Israel
  • Describe the early days of your stay in Israel and how did you cope with challenges

Of course there are other things I'm interested in knowing and I'll edit this post as more things come to mind. But please feel free to include anything you deem fit.

Thanks in advance,

ABS

Hi,

my name is Jonas Pariente, I'm a French documentary filmmaker based in NYC, and I'm currently preparing a film on the Bene Israel community who still lives in India (shooting Spring 2008).

I read your post on the Jews Of India forum page, the post where you ask people to tell their Aliyah stories.

I was curious to know if you are yourself doing a research on the subject, and if so to what extent.

Are you Bene Israel yourself?

I would love to hear from you,

Best regards & Shana Tova

Jonas,

I've posted this message originally out of my own interest. I'm a Bene Israel myself and curious about this topic since it's part of my heritage. I know that Bene Israel weren't formally recognized as Jews by the Israeli government until 1964 after much struggle. So this is a period of time that is very interesting in recent BI history.
